Tragedy

I know some of you don't know me in "real" life, so I will tell you that we have 2 dogs and 3 cats.

Two days ago, there was a tragic accident and our cat, Tigger, passed away. What happened was that I backed over him in our minivan.

I cannot even begin to describe to you the horror and despair that filled my heart when I realized what I had done. I will spare you the details, but suffice to say that God was merciful in that Tigger went very quickly, and my husband and I were able to be with him when he passed (although I was pretty much just a terrific mess, my husband actually held him and petted him while he died). God was also merciful in that all of the kids were at a visit with their mom, so they weren't there to see what happened. God was also so merciful in that Tigger did not appear to be maimed or terribly bloody, and when he died he just looked like he was sleeping.

Tigger was born on August 8, 2004, and my husband and I were just beginning our dating relationship at the time. We were there for his birth which was amazing and also kind of gross (as I'm sure most births are!). He was a good boy, and he was not afraid of anything. He wasn't afraid of dogs, though dogs were afraid of him! I don't think I've ever seen him run away from anything in my life. He grew up to be an enormous cat, I think the last time he was weighed he was about 18 pounds. He was not afraid to let you know when you made him mad - if he came and laid on your newspaper while you were reading it, and you tried to push him off, he'd sure yell at you! He had the softest fur and was always tolerant of the boys (or whomever) petting him and being generally annoying to him. He liked to hang out with our other cat Alex and lay in the sun (or the shade!) with her. Before he got fat, him and Walter ("my" cat) would chase each other around and play crazy games with each other.

He liked to go outside and go on adventures. He had my husband "trained" so that when Tigger wanted to come inside, he would go to the office window and meow until my husband went to let him inside.

RIP Tiggy. You were a very good boy and I am so sorry.

  1. Oh Brynn - now I'm crying again. I'm so sorry this happened. Tigger was a great cat. The photos of him are so fun and really show his personality. I especially love the photo of him with his head stuck inside the lid to the cat food container. That makes me laugh every time. It looks like he's just "yeah, so? I meant to do this! I like having this thing hanging from my neck." He was a good boy. And I'm so sorry that you have to go through this.

  2. I am sorry for the loss of your 7 year old son. That's what pets become - our children.
