Update on the foster care situation

Well it looks like we are getting our kids for respite tomorrow around 1, and they are staying until around 10 a.m. on Thursday.

I found out a little bit more info about the kids, and it makes me sad. They are all 3 boys (yay, I love boys!). All of them spend as much time doing daycare or activities outside of the foster home as possible - the 2 year old, C, stays in daycare from 6:15 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the foster parents' choice! That makes me really sad, and also makes me want him to be with us. He basically lives at daycare. Sounds like the 11 year old, D, basically raised the 1 year old, Y. They slept in a room together (at their mom's house) and D would get up with Y anytime he cried during the night. D is very protective of Y and it reluctant to let others care for him. What a life for an eleven year old! It sounds like he is a really good kid, and the caseworker told us it is a miracle he has turned out as well as he did.

Also apparently the bio mom is pregnant again. I wouldn't be surprised if all three kids end up with us if they will want us to take the baby too once it's born. I think he/she will have to automatically be a ward of the state because his/her siblings are, but I'm not 100% sure on that. I'm really not sure if we could do that or not, but we'll cross that bridge if and when we get there. At this point just having a 1, 2 and 11 year old sounds like chaos!

Y will turn 1 a few days after he is placed with us, so we are probably going to have some kind of a birthday party for him. Not real sure what we will do, and if we ought to invite the bio mom or not. It will be kind of weird either way. We definitely need stuff though. I'm going to be scouring Craigslist over the next few days to look for stuff. We are totally not equipped for a baby! But it's no big deal, I'm sure we'll be able to find stuff. I'm not too worried about it. People are always getting rid of baby things.

I guess Y is not a very expressive baby - doesn't do much smiling and that kind of thing. I think that is going to be a little hard for me to deal with emotionally. But at least I know so I can somewhat prepare myself.

Here's to hoping for an uneventful/easy day of respite tomorrow!

Oh and also, we have a new FSW. She has been so on top of things - I am impressed to say the least. Also I have gotten TWO phone calls from the caseworker with HHS. The last placement with C & Y I never talked to the caseworker even once. They have both been so helpful and wonderful, I am thrilled and I hope they keep being awesome. :)

  1. I thought of something after we talked last night - I have a bunch of mommy friends who have things you may need and I see these folks quite regularly. I would be happy to put out an APB for things like cribs, mattresses, car seats etc. Just send me a list of what you're looking for and I'm sure I can find quite a bit of it. Also, we'd like to help you celebrate the birthday! We'll arrive, kiddy pool in tow!

  2. Maybe we can buy a swing or a sit and play or something like that :)

  3. I'm one of Melissa's mommy friends. I ma so impressed with your courage and love! Thank you for doing that to these kids, they come with so much sad memories, please let us (my 13 month old, Nicholas and I) help you paint new pictures in their little heads! I'll take a look at the things we can lend you, but they will be most likely toys, as they're about the same age and we might be using most of the things that would be of interest. Good luck and count on me!

  4. Marilena - Thank you so very much! :)

  5. I've been going to a lot of garage sales lately and have seen tons of great baby stuff. We should go sometime. Or if you let me know what you need I can keep an eye out for you. Also, the foster care closet is very helpful I've heard.
