And it starts

Conversation with C before bed tonight:
"I love you Mommy."
"I love you too."
"Mommy, did God make me?"
"Yes, He made you very special."
"But why did he make me black? I wanted to be white like you."
"Well honey, God made you just the way He wanted you and I think you are beautiful when you are black."
*big sigh*

I know that race will be something that will always be around. Everyone will always know that our kids are adopted, without even knowing us. Our kids will always have parents with different skin, different hair, different facial features. I had hoped it would be a little longer before this came up. My husband says that when Y talks he sounds just like me. This makes sense since we have raised him since he could talk...but I talk like a white person does. And now so does he. I hope that doesn't turn out to be a bad thing.

    Awe, bless his heart. Our adopted sons are Latino, we are white. Very early on, when they were still being fostered and barely 3 years old, one of them told be that he didn't want "black eyes," but green like my husband and I have. Broke my heart in many ways. But I hope that teaching self worth and instilling confidence will help combat any negative feelings he might have about our differences. We have lots of books with illustrations of children that look like them, we celebrate events and holidays significant to their heritage... it is a work in progress.

    This brought a little tear to my eye, Brynn. We just have to keep affirming to them that God did indeed create them just the way He wanted them to be. When I was in Junior and Senior High School there was so much racial unrest in the country. One slogan that African Americans could be heard saying was "Black is Beautiful". There is some truth to that - all skin colors are beautiful in the eyes of our Creator.

    Aww...this was sweet and sad at the same time. Hopefully with time he'll understand and learn that he is beautiful the way God made him.

The news

In the spirit of this being my blog, and knowing that if anything were to happen I'd be blogging about it, I am sharing my news. So, several weeks ago I started feeling sick. We have been so lucky this year, we really haven't been sick at all which is really saying something considering the number of people who live in this house. I figured we were due, and wasn't too worried about it. You already know where this is going don't you!?!?!? Birth Story

Before I worry all of you, I want to let you know that at 5:24 a.m. on Thursday, January 17th, I gave birth to a 3 pound baby boy. He is healthy and doing awesome so far. I was exactly 29 weeks into my pregnancy. This is my birth story. The evening of the 15/16th I was having some contractions. Nothing too crazy though. The morning of the 16th I complained to Brian that every time I moved in bed I had a contraction.  After what happened last week (having contractions, went to L&D, nothing was wrong) I just assumed it was basically the same. The 16th was my 30th birthday.  I felt pretty crappy all day.  I assumed I was either starting to get sick (since my 3 little ones had been sick) or else that my body was working hard to fight off the sickness. I went to the Social Security Office to request new SS cards for the kids, came home and took a nap, and swept and mopped the kitchen floor. Good news/bad news

Ben has been putting himself to sleep for nap times! Can you believe it? If you would have told me a week ago that Ben would be napping on his own right now I would have laughed in your face and said no way! NO WAY! Yesterday he took THREE naps on his own, the first two were an hour and 15 minutes and the last one was only 40 minutes, but hey beggars can't be choosers! I just nursed him, put him down in his bassinet awake, patted him a minute, then walked away. No crying, no fussing, and when I left he was awake. It's a miracle!  I think it has really helped that he has apparently developed a great love for his middle and ring fingers, and sucks on them regularly. It looks like he's signing "I love you". :) The bad news is, he has a cold so he's not really sleeping any better at night.  Last night he was up 8 times between 8 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. this morning. I downloaded a sleep tracker ap on my phone so I can easily see when he was awake and not have to tr
